Ronnie Breslow, born Renate Reutlinger, escaped Nazi Germany as a child on the boat the St. Louis. Even though Renate and her mother had valid landing documents, her family and other refugees on the ship were refused landing in Cuba and the United States. The ship returned to Europe where Renate eventually arrived in the United States after landing in a detention camp in Rotterdam. This episode focuses on Renate’s experience as a refugee arriving in the United States and how her definition of American was shaped by her childhood.
